Bangladesh melarang tokoh kartun Jepang, Doraemon, muncul di layar kaca lantaran khawatir anak-anak bakal kecanduan. Versi yang ditayangkan di Bangladesh merupakan edisi sulih suara berbahasa Hindi. Padahal, pemerintah Bangladesh tengah mencanangkan gerakan berbahasa Bengali.
Menteri Informasi, Hasanul Haque Inu, di hadapan parlemen mengatakan telah mengirim surat larangan tersebut kepada seluruh saluran televisi yang menayangkan film kartun JepangDoraemon. “Pemerintah tidak ingin atmosfer pendidikan anak-anak terganggu oleh Doraemon,” katanya.
Larangan diberlakukan setelah pemberitaan beberapa surat kabar lokal, yang mengkhawatirkan anak-anak kecanduan berbahasa Hindi ketimbang Bengali. Politikus partai yang berkuasa, Shahriar Alam, meminta agar saluran televisi hanya menayangkan kartun-kartun asing yang disulihsuarakan ke dalam bahasa Bengali.
Doraemon, ciptaan seniman manga Fujiko F. Fujio, digambarkan sebagai robot kucing yang dikirim dari abad ke-22 untuk membantu seorang anak bernama Nobita. Kementerian Luar Negeri Jepang menunjuk Doraemon sebagai Duta Besar Animasi tahun 2008, dalam upaya meningkatkan perhatian terhadap budaya Jepang di luar negeri.
